Restless Leg Syndrome is Genetic

Posted by Syndrome Directory on July 20th, 2007

Many doctors have professed a belief that Restless Leg Syndrome is all in the mind. However, from recent studies scientists have shown a link between genes and Restless Leg Syndrome.

For many years, many people who have suffered from Restless Leg Syndrome symptoms, such as twitching and jerking leg movements or unpleasant tingling sensations, have had to put up with suggestions that the physical symptoms were psychologically generated. But a study published by the New England Journal of Medicine, based upon subject studies in the U.S. and Iceland, has made a connection between a common gene variant and nocturnal leg twitches.

A second study has identified the same genetic variant as well as two others in Canadian and German sufferers of Restless Leg Syndrome.
